Day Two Plans
- There was a window of fifty minutes that was available during our
Reading Intervention class period that were dedicated to this
project. During those fifty minutes, the students were instructed
to get in their reading groups (either group one or two as assigned
at the beginning of the school year). Group One was given twenty-
five minutes on the computers to complete Read 180 course
material and Group Two was situated at the small group table. Once
the first twenty-five minutes were completed, the students were
asked to switch.
- Together, each small table group, reread and collaboratively
discussed how they would summarize the UNICEF article, "Child
Labour" in one sentence.
Group One: "This article is about Child Labor and how there are a
lot of kids who have to work a lot".
Group Two: "This article was about how there are so many children
who have to miss school to work to help their families survive".
- After each group reread the article and collaboratively came up with
a one sentence response to the article, each group was then
instructed to highlight three key facts/statistics that were presented
in the article.
1) "An estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are engaged in child labour - one in six children in the world".
2) "They [Child Laborers] are everywhere but invisible, toiling as domestic servants in homes, labouring behind the walls of workshops, hidden from view in plantations".
3) "Children living in the poorest households and in rural areas are most likely to be engaged in child labour, especially girls. Millions of girls who work as domestic servants are especially vulnerable to exploitation and abuse".
