Motivations for the Today's Child Labor Lesson: Day One
My students are a part of a reading intervention program known as Reading 180. As a part of this program, there are different Workshop units that address a number of intrapersonal as well as interpersonal issues. Currently, my students are working on Workshop #4 which is titled "Stolen Childhoods". As a part of this Workshop, the students were asked to read the UNICEF article titled "Child Labour". After reading this article as a whole group, it was incredibly apparent based on the responses of my students that this was a topic of interest for them. There interest was discovered by the questions and interactive discussion based on the situations and conditions that arise due to Child Labour engagement. As a result, it was my motivation to provide this students with more opportunities to begin exploring their array of questions regarding this topic while at the same time explicitly beginning to teach some of literacies important ideas, such as highlighting and summarization.
